Amtrak moved its rail operations to Minneapolis in 1971 and closed the station.

From the mid-1900s, Union Depot was a bustling train station in the heart of the West Seventh neighborhood of Saint Paul. Saint Paul Homes sprung up around this area with quick access to other parts of Minnesota and the country. In 1971, Amtrak moved its rail service from Saint Paul to Minneapolis and in 1978 opened the Midway Station between Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

The former depot still stands today. Part of it has been converted into the lofts called the Saint Paul Union Depot. The remaining part houses a number of businesses including the Post Office. The USPS is planning to move its current operations to the bulk processing center in Eagan. This is leading the push in the MN State Legislature and Ramsey County to find money to match the $50 million federal government grant to renovate Union Depot.

When finished, the Union Depot Lofts will be used for light rail, buses, and Amtrak. It will once again be the center of transportation for the West Seventh neighborhood.
