From the late 1800s till the 1970s, the Union Depot was a busy train station in the heart of the West Seventh neighborhood in Saint Paul. Amtrak moved its rail operations to Minneapolis in 1971 and closed the station. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, but still it laid dormant till 2005 when renovations began to convert this beautiful building into lofts, condos, and retail space.

The St. Paul Union Depot Lofts were born. Consisting of 33 units, many of them are two level units with exposed brick and open ceilings.  Most units are approximately 900 square feet, one bedroom units.  The prices average around $160k.

The former depot still stands today.  Part of it has been converted into the lofts called the Saint Paul Union Depot.  The remaining part  houses a number of businesses including the Post Office.  The USPS is planning to move its current operations to the bulk processing center in Eagan.  This is leading the push in the MN State Legislature and Ramsey County to find money to match the $50 million federal government grant to renovate Union Depot.

When finished, the Union Depot Lofts will be used for light rail, buses, and Amtrak.  It will once again be the center of transportation for the West Seventh neighborhood.
