Downtown | Lowertown Saint Paul
The downtown area of Saint Paul is also know by Lowertown to its residents. It started as the “lower landing” on the Mississippi river back in the 1800s. Saint Paul started as a major shipping center serving the entire upper Midwest. You can still see much of this heritage in the rail lines, barge docks, and manufacturing structures along the rivers banks. In 1983, Lowertown was added to the National Register of Historic Places, allowing the city to protect much of its heritage.
The residents formed the Lowertown Redevelopment Corporation back in the last 1970s to bring urban living back to Saint Paul real estate. They have succeeded by seeing almost 1500 more housing units added since that time. Many developers have restored old buildings such as the Union Depot, but new buildings such as Galtier Plaza have been constructed. Their work has been a unique partnership between the public and private sector which was done through successful planning and execution of a development strategy for the 18 block Lowertown area in Saint Paul.
If you live in Lowertown you are truly living in the city with all its excitement and convenience. You have quick access to restaurants, plays, work, and quick access via I-94 and 35E. The Ordway Theater, Public Library, and Science Museum are just a few of the attractions.
