Payne Phalen Neighborhood

Just minutes from Downtown, Payne Phalen was one of the first areas of Saint Paul that was settled by immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Sweden, and Italy in the 1840s & 1850s. Prior to the Civil War, and before the major bridges were built over the river, this area was where many wealthy Saint Paul homes were located.

During the industrial age Payne Phalen became the site for large manufacturers including: 3M, Whirlpool and Hamm’s Brewery to name a few. Most of these companies closed during the 1970s, hurting the neighborhood and throwing it into a downward trend of falling home prices and rising crime.

More recently, a renewed interest in the area has been brought about by new American immigrants from Asia, Latin America and the African continent moving into the area to continue the rich immigrant history. This influx of new homeowners has revitalized the area both economically and culturally.

Worker housing built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s constructed in Italianate, Folk Victorian, Queen Anne and Bungalow styles. Many of these homes still exist, but you will also find 1950’s rambler and ranch housing. Most of the housing in this area is smaller and simpler than its Saint Paul neighbors.
