Summit/University Neighborhood in Saint Paul

The Summit/University neighborhood in Saint Paul, MN is one of the Twin Cities most diverse areas and also one of its most well known. Much of the fame of the Summit/University neighborhood comes its historic and landmark properties. The most well known is the Cathedral of St. Paul, which was completed in 1915 and stood as the tallest building in St. Paul until the 1930s. It is generally considered the most important place of worship named in honor of the apostle Paul in the United States.

As the name suggests, the Summit/University neighborhood is bounded by University Avenue to the north and Summit Avenue to the south and east, with Lexington Parkway delineating the western boundary of the neighborhood. It is officially known as St. Paul Planning District 8.

The neighborhood has a reputation for being well-maintained and organized, with numerous block clubs, civic organizations and volunteer groups giving back to the community regularly. One noted event each year is Rondo Days, an annual festival commemorating the history of the neighborhood, which is said to have changed after the building of the highway through the center of the area in the 1960s. The Summit/University area includes the neighborhood that was known as Lower Rondo prior to the building of Interstate 94 through the area.

The population of the Summit/University neighborhood is currently estimated to be approximately 20,000, with more than half of those counted as working age adults. There are also many students in the neighborhood, as it is close to Concordia University and also a convenient distance from the University of Minnesota.

‘Summit-U’ as the neighborhood is colloquially called, is well served by convenient access to I-94 allowing quick travel to other parts of the Twin Cities and the state, making it popular with locals and commuters alike and serving to keep demand for housing high.
